This illustration features a plague doctor whom represents life in the physical world, the pursuit of knowledge, and a higher consciousness. His lantern lights his path through the dark wilderness. He is met by a white barn owl which symbolizes the light and the spiritual planes. Through his journey, the black dog always follows him and watches from a distance.

A black dog is primarily found in the folklores of the British Isles and is essentially a nocturnal spectre. Its appearance is regarded as a portent of death.
